Excluding loan payments, that’s an average of how much a person can expect to pay driving a medium sedan 15,000 miles a year. The cost of driving sport utility vehicles and minivans is even higher.

In compiling its annual Your Driving Costs analysis, AAA provides tools and advice motorists can use to estimate their operating and ownership costs. AAA figures in average fuel, routine maintenance, tires, insurance, license and registration, loan finance charges and depreciation costs. The annual guide includes a worksheet for figuring your own costs.

AAA has been conducting the Your Driving Costs study since 1950 – when driving a car 10,000 miles annually cost 9 cents a mile and gasoline sold for 27 cents per gallon. In 2013, the composite national average cost-per-mile was 60.8 cents.
