Remote Calling

Mental Distraction – What Is AAA Doing About It?

AAA is calling for auto and electronics companies to minimize the potential for dangerous distractions caused by voice-activated technologies by addressing key contributing factors to mental distraction including complexity, accuracy and time on task, with the goal of making systems that are no more demanding than listening to the radio or an audiobook. AAA plans to use these research findings to continue a dialogue with policymakers, safety advocates and technology developers.

What’s Next for AAA Research on Mental Distraction?

The creation of the mental distraction rating system and the development of the core testing methods will allow the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety to conduct ongoing research into cognitive distraction. The next phase of the research will measure whether age or familiarity with hands-free systems affects the level of distraction. The results will be available next year.
