Truck Crash

Causes of Crashes

There is no single national database of the causes or contributing factors for large truck crashes. In separate reports, the General Accounting Office and the Department of Transportation’s Inspector General have indicated that lack of data on the causes of crashes hampers the government’s ability to effectively address truck safety issues.

AAA has testified before Congress on the need for better data on car/truck crashes which can serve as the foundation for effective traffic safety solutions.

AAA called for a study to identify the causes of truck crashes, emphasizing the need to invest in building data systems to gather and analyze the factors that contribute to truck crashes and the injuries they produce. AAA worked with the House and Senate Appropriations Committees to fund an initial study that was included in the Motor Carrier Safety Improvement Act passed in 1999. We continue our commitment to ongoing research.
